A numerous developments in bicycle design brought about the shape we know today. The pedals were moved from the front wheels to a position between the wheels and a chain drive was added.
Wirespoke wheels, sprung saddles, gears, ball-bearings and a free-wheel device were other important changes made by the 1880s. Last to be added was the pneumatic (air-filled) tyre.
