Greek Fire - In approximately 7th century the Greeks of Byzantium possessed a deadly secret weapon. Known as Greek fire, it seems to have been a petroleum based mixture which was thrown in barrels or shot out of tubes.

It caught fire spontaneously and could not be put out by the water that’s why the Greeks made this deadly flame-throwing chemical remains a mystery. It was greatly feared by their enemies, whose wooden warships were especially susceptible during a sea fight.
