Who built the first nuclear reactor? In 1942, Enrico Fermi was carrying out nuclear research at the University of Chicago in the United States. In the university squash court he and Leo Szilard built the world's first atomic pile, in which a chain reaction could be started and controlled. The pile was made of uranium blocks separated by graphite Cadmium rods could be inserted into the pile to halt the reactor.
